Why does my mobile signal keep dropping — and how to fix it
Mobile signal drops because of distance and obstacles between you and the mast, weak indoor coverage, a busy or faulty mast, or a problem with your handset or SIM. The quickest fix for indoor drop-outs is Wi-Fi Calling, which routes calls over your broadband. If only your phone is affected, restart it, reseat or replace the SIM, and update its software.

Constant signal drop-outs are frustrating, but the causes are a short list. Here’s what’s behind them and how to fix each.
1. Distance and obstacles
Signal weakens with distance from the mast and through walls, hills and buildings. Near a window or upstairs is usually stronger. Our fix mobile signal tool walks you through it.
2. Weak indoor coverage — turn on Wi-Fi Calling
This is the big one. Wi-Fi Calling routes calls and texts over your home broadband, so weak mobile signal indoors stops mattering. Turn it on in your phone settings, along with VoLTE / 4G Calling. See our Wi-Fi Calling guide.
3. A busy or faulty mast
If several phones in the area struggle at once, the mast may be congested, under maintenance, or faulty. Check your network’s status page; there’s nothing to fix at your end.
4. Your handset or SIM
If only your phone drops signal:
- Restart it, or toggle flight mode.
- Reseat or replace the SIM — old SIMs cause drop-outs.
- Update the phone’s software.
- Try the SIM in another phone to see whether the fault follows the SIM or the handset.
5. The wrong network for your area
If signal is poor everywhere you go, another network may simply cover your area better. See the best mobile network for your area.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone keep losing signal at home?
Thick walls and distance from the mast weaken indoor signal. The easiest fix is Wi-Fi Calling, which routes calls and texts over your home broadband so weak mobile signal stops mattering.
Why does only my phone lose signal when others don’t?
If other phones on the same network are fine, the problem is usually your handset or SIM. Restart the phone, reseat or replace the SIM, update its software, and try the SIM in another phone.
Do mobile signal boosters work?
Some mobile repeaters are legal to use in the UK if they meet Ofcom’s technical requirements, but non-compliant ones remain illegal. Wi-Fi Calling or a signal box (femtocell) from your own network is usually the simpler, safer fix.
